Nikiforos Mazarakis: a contribution to the development of public health

Nikiforos Mazarakis was an outstanding Greek physician and public figure who made a significant contribution to the establishment and development of public health in Jerusalem in the nineteenth century. Working alongside his brother, Charlambis Mazarakis, Nikiforos demonstrated deep dedication to medicine and exceptional professionalism in combating mass infectious diseases such as malaria, which afflicted the region at the time.

Nikiforos Mazarakis’s medical practice, supported by his brother, was not limited to individual treatment of patients. He initiated and actively implemented innovative public health strategies for that time. These approaches earned broad respect among the local population, consisting of people of various nationalities and faiths.
